What are the Different Types of Dentures?

We usually visualize a set of prosthetics with a pink base attached when we think of dentures. But, in reality, there are different types of dentures available. Here are some types you can find:

1. Traditional Dentures

When all of the teeth are missing, traditional dentures are recommended. These prosthetics sit on top of your gums, unlike dental bridges, which are anchored to the present teeth. Generally, full dentures are placed 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed or extracted.

2. Partial Dentures

We think of a full set of fake teeth when someone mentions dentures, but did you know there are partial dentures, too? If some of the natural teeth are remaining, partial dentures are used. A pink-color base is attached to a metal piece, which holds the denture in the mouth. Made from all-acrylic or acrylic material, partial dentures are pretty convenient to use, and they even keep the other teeth from moving. Plus, they are removable!

3. Custom Dentures

You even have the option of a more natural-looking smile with dentures, all thanks to custom dentures. They are customized to look realistic and fit your smile, which gives it a natural appearance. However, custom dentures are made of more expensive teeth โ€” which is why it looks so good!

4. Immediate Dentures

The day your teeth are removed, your dentist might place immediate dentures. Not everyone is a candidate for these types of dentures, though.

5. Implant-Supported Dentures

There is a type of denture that uses dental implants to secure and support the prosthetics, known as implant-supported dentures. Implants provide solid support for a solid foundation, which helps the dentures stay in place in a secure manner. In addition, the implant looks natural and is durable as well!

6. Over Dentures

Dental implants are used with overdentures, too, to provide proper support. They sit on the top of the gums in the upper or lower jaw, depending on what the patient requires. Overdentures are removable, too, making them pretty convenient.

7. Upper Dentures

Another type of denture is an upper denture, and they are what they sound like dentures for upper teeth. So, if you have missing teeth in the upper jaw, you can opt for these prosthetics to restore your smile.

8. Economy Dentures

If you are looking for a more cost-effective type of dentures, economy dentures might be the solution! While they are an affordable option, economy dentures are not a comfortable option, and their appearance is rather artificial. Also, you will need a dental adhesive for them to fit securely!

Final Takeaway

There are many types of dentures available, so which one should you go for? From traditional to partial to implant-supported dentures, your dentist can help you make the right choice.
