Veneers vs. lumineers both serve somewhat the same purpose in the cosmetic dentistry world and can be confusing for any layman to understand. Both are pretty popular to enhance the smile.

Veneers and Lumineers – What Are They?

Veneers

They are thin, prosthetic, shell-like dental device fit for enhancing the overall look of your teeth. It does not matter, whatever cosmetic issue you have on your teeth, either staining of teeth chipped, or broken tooth— veneer can solve all.

Lumineers

Lumineers are as thin as a contact lens and seamlessly placed on the tooth surface. If we compare these devices, they fall under laboratory-prepared porcelain veneer; therefore are also known as no-prep veneers.

The primary difference between veneers and lumineers is their thickness. Lumineers are ultra-thin laminates.

Apart from the prime difference, there are other distinguishing characteristics between the two as well.

Veneers vs. Lumineers

We have mentioned 5 differences on the basis of their characteristics detailed for better understanding:

Their Permanency
As far as veneers are in question, they are permanent. Once you get it, there is no going back. The reason behind it is the shaving of tooth enamel which is a necessary step. Since it does not have regeneration power, the damage or any change to it is permanent.

Therefore, once you get a veneer, there is no going back. In case of any damage, you can’t leave the teeth as it is, replacement is necessary to cover the sensitive enamel.

On the other hand, lumineers vs veneers are semi-permanent. This property gives you the power to remove them later at any step of life. Lumineers pose less of a threat than veneers because of minimal damage.

Thickness Factor
Thickness is the main basis of the difference between veneers vs. lumineers. Veneers are 0.5 mm in thickness; whereas, lumineers are 0.3 mm thick. This makes the application of lumineers easier than veneers since they are thinner.

Durability
Dental veneers vs. lumineers, which will stay on the tooth for the longest time? Veneers remain free from any kind of stain for many years; therefore, they last longer than its counterpart in general.

Opacity
Veneers are great at masking discoloration of teeth and resisting stains as well. On the other hand, lumineers are translucent, making them not a suitable choice to hide severe discoloration.

Having said that, they still manage chipped, broken teeth, or any which has minor discoloration, is misaligned, or in case of diastema (teeth gap).

Veneers or Lumineers, Which Takes Less Time to Prepare?

Lumineers are two-step preparation items and, so, are known as no-prep veneers. This is the quality that makes lumineers the best. There is no involvement in shaving the enamel, making it minimally invasive.

Step 1 involves your dentist taking teeth impressions. And then, they will put lumineers on on the next visit. Voila, you’re done. No pain, no damage.

Whereas if we look at veneers, they constitute more than 1 step of the entire cycle, thus taking more time. Firstly, your teeth will be prepped, grinding to make area for veneers; next, impressions of teeth, then temporary veneers—finally, permanent bonding.

Final Take Out

Both options, veneers vs. lumineers, have their set of advantages and disadvantages. Get in touch with your dentist about the treatment plan best for you. Call Houston Dental Implant Center for more information.
